Biodiversity

In brief

In May 2022, Cement Europe launched its Biodiversity Roadmap, setting a long-term vision for protecting and enhancing biodiversity in and around quarries. Through this roadmap, the European cement industry contributes to the global goal of becoming Nature Positive — by restoring ecosystems, improving ecological value, and promoting sustainable growth in harmony with the natural world.

The roadmap highlights how quarrying and biodiversity can coexist, and even complement one another. Many quarries provide habitats for rare species and create opportunities for ecosystem restoration. Cement Europe and its members work closely with nature conservation partners to ensure these opportunities are maximised.

Collaboration for Nature

In October 2021, Cement Europe (then CEMBUREAU) joined forces with BirdLife International, Heidelberg Materials, Eurogypsum, and UEPG to publish the Extractive Sector Species Protection Code of Conduct

This guidance helps manage temporary habitats within extractive areas, building on the principles of the EU Birds and Habitats Directives. It provides a practical, science-based approach for protecting species while enabling responsible resource use. The Code of Conduct is a strong example of how industry and conservation organisations can work together to find lasting, balanced solutions — supporting both biodiversity and local development.

Biodiversity in Practice

Across Europe, our members are implementing diverse initiatives to restore nature, create habitats, and monitor ecosystems in and around quarries. These case studies showcase how the cement sector is turning its biodiversity commitments into action.
